I'm perpetually planning trips, I just don't get to go on nearly as many as I'd like. So my step one might be something you would do after you bought airline tickets.
1. Pick a place and google the living piss out of it. How do you get there (plane, train, boat perhaps? Ooh, that'd be fun). How do you get around once you get there, where can you stay, how much does it cost, where are the museums, what shows are playing in their theater district? Compare all of these to the maps you already own. Make a favorites folder named after the city or country, save your links and move on. You haven't cleaned your house in ages.
2. Share your new ideas and dream trip plans with friends. Who wants to go with you? When would you go?
3. After all this planning, you and your friends decide impulsively in the matter of an evening to all go someplace completely different. Within 45 minutes you all have tickets.
4. Google the living piss out of the new place. Make sure you have a map.
5. Freak out because you don't have the right clothes (see previous blog).
6. Give up on the clothes and move to a place of acceptance and complacency.
7. Two days before you leave, freak out because you are so unprepared. You should have done more to get ready, at least bought some new shoes.
8. Worry you'll be late for your plane, so you don't sleep well for those early morning flights. But you always make it on time.
9. Wheels up. Ready or not, here you come!

...speaking of shoes, you'd be amazed at how many shoe stores there are in France! Even a small town has 2 or 3. The French say they can tell Americans by their shoes...their shoes are so functional!...so splurge for something totally inappropriate!
